Optimising Crew Resource Planning at Monarch Airlines
Crew resource planning is about having the right crew in the right place at the right time, and is a function at the heart of any airline. It is a supply chain that has interdependencies with many other parts of the business in an often complex web of supplier-customer relationships.
Constraints and demands are many, and objectives in the areas of safety, cost, operational integrity and people management often conflict. A common problem is to perform well in some aspects and poorly in others.
At Monarch, Invenzyme developed a balanced scorecard to quickly assess performance of the crew supply chain and identify opportunities. We developed a number of recommendations to enhance stability, costs and the flexibility of crew deployment. The timing of recommendations was based on the typical lifecycle for development of a crew resource planning function, where stability is paramount as a precursor to greater efficiency and growth.
We advised on managing the risks associated with alternative courses of action. The nature of the crew supply chain is such that many initiatives only bear fruit after a year or more and it can be difficult to predict the outcome of the complex web of interactions between crew headcount, flying hours, flight time limitations, industrial relations and the commercial schedule.
We looked carefully at the balance between schedule requirements and crew costs, and assessed the crew-efficiency of different types of operation. Finally, we advised on how to develop the organisation and systems to support short-term problem-solving and long-term planning.
