Background to LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®

LEGO SERIOUS PLAY was developed as an alternative to conventional strategy-making in the late 1990s and first brought to market in 2002. It was the brainchild of LEGO's then Chief Executive, Kjeld Kristiansen and two professors from the IMD business school, Bart Victor and Johan Roos. It's a consulting methodology used to facilitate workshops in such a way that new insights emerge and communication is deepened.

Based on cutting-edge academic research, the potential of LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®

is unleashed through a process of building LEGO models, giving them meaning, and sharing that meaning in the form of a story. Participants form a shared understanding of the landscape they face, and are the able to develop Simple Guiding Principles that will guide them to make the right decisions in real time.

Previously only offered in workshops faciliated by LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Certified Partners, such as Invenzyme, LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® is now an open source application and can be used by anyone. Why not join one of our PLAY4Business training courses and learn how to apply it  yourself in your organisation, or find out about the many facilitated workshops we can offer you!

Science of LEGO SERIOUS PLAY

LEGO SERIOUS PLAY has been developed out of research in the fields of psychology and strategy, including such theories as:

  • Constructivism (Piaget)
  • Constructionism (Papert)
  • Flow (Csikzentmihalyi)
  • Real-time strategy (Hamel, Mintzberg)
  • Serious play (Roos & Victor)

A more detailed account of how some of the work in these areas is built into LEGO SERIOUS PLAY can be found in this booklet on the Science of LEGO SERIOUS PLAY.

Further research into the concepts behind LSP was undertaken from 2000-2005 by Imagination Lab, under the direction of Johan Roos.
